The “interim” tag has officially been removed from Dr. Brenda McCartney’s role as superintendent, pending state approval.
During the Feb. 28, 2024, special work session of the Garrett County Board of Education (GCBOE), the Board voted to award Dr. McCartney, Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) interim superintendent, with a four-year contract as the superintendent of schools.
“I am honored to be offered the opportunity to serve as superintendent, pending state approval, in a school system and community that values their schools and our commitment to excellence,” said Dr. McCartney. “Along with our many strengths, we also know we have opportunities for positive change to guide the school system to be even better in the coming years. I am looking forward to the work ahead.”
Dr. McCartney’s contract is pending approval from the Maryland state superintendent. Upon approval, the contract will run from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2028.
It has been nearly a year since she was appointed the interim superintendent.
“When I was asked to come back for a year, that was a big deal, and then we began to talk about four years and that was even bigger,” said Dr. McCartney during the work session. “After having spent a year here with both the Board and the members of the school system, it just feels like the right thing for me to do.
“I am honored that the Board feels the same way, and I look forward to looking with everyone for the next four years to support the school system.”
