Ribbon Cutting Held for New Germany Store

A ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by Garrett County Business Development was held at the New Germany Store, 6876 New Germany Road, Grantsville, on September 20, 2024.

"This is exciting," said Garrett County Commissioner Paul Edwards. "Sort of a mid-way stop between the southern end of the county and the northern end of the county. With people visiting and all the parks out this way you've got a great opportunity to serve those folks. It's good to see it being rejuvenated and run."

Owner Harold Schrock explained that he and his family came to Garrett County from rural upstate New York. They were looking for property in their local church group, Swanton Mennonite Fellowship.

"We were not specifically looking for a store, but by Providence came across this property while looking for a residence," he said. "There was sufficient living quarters for our family of eight children, and the price was reasonable in comparison to other properties we found in the region."

The business is currently operating as a gas station/convenience store with a deli. Made-to-order sandwiches can be built out of any of the 20 different deli meats and cheeses in stock, along with a variety of condiments and vegetables. The store also stocks locally-made jams and jellies and hopes to work with local small farms to increase its offering of healthy, high quality foods.

Moving forward, Mr. Schrock also plans to add some additional fresh baked goods and add to the store's stock of camping- and fishing-related gear.

Current store hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 7 AM to 6 PM, with plans to open some Mondays, particularly on holiday weekends. The store will be closed on Sundays.
