Commissioners Present 60th Anniversary Proclamation to Community Action

The Garrett County Commissioners held their second meeting of the month on July 22, 2025, at the Crellin Community Center.

Current and former members of Garrett County Community Action Committee were in attendance for the special commendation of the 60th anniversary of Community Action in Garrett County.

"Founded in 1965, GCCAC was established with the bold mission to strengthen families, promote self sufficiency, and build a thriving community," said Commissioner Paul Edwards. "Over the last six decades, with unwavering dedication and partnership, it has become a cornerstone institution, offering innovative programs and housing, early Childhood education, transportation, workforce development, and senior services."

Chris Mullet, CEO of GCCAC, came to the front to say a few words.

"I've become acquainted with Community Action agencies across the country since coming here 18 months ago," said Miullet. "What I have found is the connections we have in Garrett County are pretty unique. We have a fantastic relationship with our local government, other agencies across the county. We just had a meeting today with the Board of Realtors about extending the Pathways to Home Ownership and making it even more accessible.

That's the kind of communication that I have on a regular basis with people across the county, that doesn't happen in a lot of places."

Mullet went on to praise institutions such as Christian Crossing and Highland Thrift.

"We could not do the work we do," he said. "You would be shocked at the tens of thousands of dollars that come to us from other non-profits so that we don't have to say 'no' when we don't have the funding for something. What makes GCCAC so successful besides its staff and board? Garrett County. That is a beautiful thing."
