The Maryland Department of Agriculture is accepting applications for its 2026–2027 Cover Crop Program from June 22 through July 17, 2026 at local soil conservation district offices.
This grant program helps farmers offset the costs of planting fall cover crops, including seed, labor, and equipment expenses. Cover crops provide significant environmental and agricultural benefits by:
- Recycling unused nutrients for spring cash crops
- Adding organic matter to the soil
- Controlling weeds and pests
- Reducing soil erosion and compaction
- Protecting fields from excessive rainfall and drought conditions
Cover crops play a vital role in protecting local waterways and the Chesapeake Bay while improving soil health and crop productivity.
