The Green Room Celebrates Grand Opening With Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

The Garrett County Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Garrett County Department of Business Development, hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, September 18, 2025, to celebrate the grand opening of The Green Room Lounge in downtown Oakland, Maryland.

The event was led by Connor Norman, Business Development Specialist and Chair of the Garrett County Diplomats. Local leaders in attendance included Commissioners Paul Edwards and Larry Tichnell; County Administrator Kevin Null; Oakland Mayor Andrew Sauder; Business Development Manager Kim Durst; Oakland Mainstreet Coordinator Jake Byng-Forgrave; Chamber Board Members David Jochynek, Emily Tusing, and Julie Yoder; and Chamber President Nick Sharps.

Garrett County Diplomats Kim Carter, David Jochynek, Kristin Skeweris, and Connor Norman also took part in the celebration, presenting owners Jennifer and Mikey Virts with a First Dollar of Profit Certificate and assisting with the ceremonial ribbon cutting.

"We are incredibly proud of what the Virts family has achieved here," said Norman. "This business is pivotal to growing Downtown Oakland as a destination for shopping and dining for visitors and locals alike.”

A Green Room, in theatre terms, is where actors and crew members go to relax in between scenes and shows. That same spirit inspired The Green Room Lounge—a place to relax and connect with family and friends while unwinding from the drama of the day.

Owners Mikey and Jen Virts, who met as theatre majors at Frostburg State University, have spent over twenty years producing, directing, acting, and sharing their love of theatre. Every drink and dish on the menu is inspired by theatrical actors, characters, or plays, and guests are encouraged to ask about the stories behind the names.

Theatre, one of the oldest forms of art, continues to flourish in Garrett County. The Green Room invites the community to support local theatre programs and to visit Our Town Theatre, located just blocks away. Learn more at ourtowntheatre.org

“Congratulations Jen and Mikey,” said Sharps. “The Green Room sets the stage for connection, community, and great memories—giving locals and visitors alike a casual, creative spot to gather. May your debut season run long and garner rave reviews!”
