Garrett County's skilled workforce development efforts received a significant boost with the announcement that Garrett College has been awarded $50,000 through the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) to enhance training opportunities at its Career Technology Training Center (CTTC).
The funding, announced by U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen and Angela Alsobrooks and Congresswoman April McClain Delaney, is part of a broader $562,851 federal investment supporting workforce development, education, research, and community development projects across Western Maryland.
Garrett College will use the funding to purchase 11 multi-process welders and one band saw for its existing welding lab at the Career Technology Training Center. The upgraded equipment is expected to benefit approximately 135 students over the next three years, providing hands-on training that aligns with the needs of regional manufacturers, construction firms, and other skilled trades employers.

"This funding ensures that students have access to modern equipment and industry-relevant training, allowing local employers to recruit skilled workers while creating career opportunities that encourage residents to live and work in Garrett County."
Welding remains one of the region's most in-demand skilled trades, supporting industries including manufacturing, infrastructure, construction, utilities, and energy. By enhancing training capacity at the CTTC, Garrett College continues to play a vital role in developing the workforce needed to support existing businesses, attract new employers, and encourage long-term economic growth.
The investment also reinforces Garrett County's commitment to providing education and workforce pathways that lead to family-sustaining careers. Through partnerships with local employers, workforce agencies, and educational institutions, Garrett County continues to expand opportunities for residents while helping businesses address workforce shortages.
The Garrett College award was one of three ARC investments announced for Western Maryland. Additional funding includes $312,851 for the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science Appalachian Laboratory in Frostburg to enhance environmental research and workforce training capabilities, and $200,000 for Archway Station, Inc. to renovate supportive housing that helps individuals recovering from mental illness or developmental disabilities obtain stable housing and employment.
The Appalachian Regional Commission is a federal-state economic development partnership serving 423 counties across 13 Appalachian states. ARC investments support initiatives that strengthen local economies through workforce development, infrastructure improvements, entrepreneurship, education, and community development.
